pukul manyapu
Pukul manyapu (literally "broom hitting") is an age-old tradition in Mamala and Morela villages in Ambon Island, performed by 20 young men, divided in 2 groups, whipping each other with 1.5 m-long broom sticks. The whipping wounds are then healed with a kind of traditional coconut-palm oil. It is the main part of an annual ceremony at every 7th day of the month of Syawal in Islamic calendar, said to commemorate the defeat of Kapitan Tulukabessy and his warriors when fighting the Dutch collonial forces in the 16th century.
