Fort Duurstede
Fort Duurstede in Saparua-island was built by Portuguese collonial settlers in 1676, then seized and rebuilt in 1691 by Dutch rulers to guard their power and interest as spice-trade monopolist in the region. It was massively attacked and besieged in 1817 by local warriors led by Thomas Matulessy, a.k.a. Kapitan Pattimura, who killed every soldier in it and took control of the fort for 6 months before being hit back by the Dutch. Located on a hill with beautiful coastal panorama surrounding the fort, today it is one of the most visited tourist spots in Maluku Islands.
