Knock sensor (knock control system) (KCS)
By detecting high frequency vibrations that are early signs of pinging (pre-ignition) or knocking, a computerised engine control can retard the spark timing until the knock ceases. This allows an engine to take advantage of a high compression ratio (for more power) while reducing the risk of damage from hot weather, increased engine loads or lower grades of gasoline.
