solar wind
Stream of ionized gas, mainly hydrogen, continuously flowing outward from the sun, at very high velocity (≈ 400 km s−1 on the average) and with variable intensity. While passing near the earth the solar wind interacts with the magnetic field to produce various effects in the upper atmosphere (e.g., aurora).
