nucleic acid
A macromolecule composed of phosphoric acid, pentose sugar, and organic bases. The two nucleic acids, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA), are made up of long chains of molecules called nucleotides (q.v.). They were first isolated as part of a protein complex in 1871, and were separated from the protein moiety in 1889.
