A professional who controls gas or oil fired soaking pit or reheating furnaces to heat sheets, blooms, billets, and slabs to specified rolling temperature. Respnsibilities include:

• Ignites furnace burners with torch, and turns valves to regulate flow of fuel and air to burners.
• Signals charger operator to charge steel into furnace.
• Reads dials and gauges, observes color of steel in furnace, and adjusts controls to maintain specified temperature in furnace.
• May assist workers in repairing, replacing, or adjusting furnace equipment and burners, using handtools.
