ground leakage current

Current that is introduced into the grounding conductor by normal equipment operation, such as capacitive coupling. Many RFI/EMI filters in electronic equipment have capacitors from current-carrying conductors to the equipment-grounding conductor to shunt noise emitted from or injected into their power supplies. While there are relatively low current level limits imposed by regulatory agencies (e.g., UL specifies maximum 3. 5 mA, hospital equipment 0. 5 mA), not all equipment is listed. Even with listed equipment, the sum of the current from a large quantity of such equipment in a facility can result in significant ground currents.
