In a baseband television signal, the DC level (nominally 0 volts) from which the amplitudes of the various components of the signal are measured. Conventionally, the viewable parts of the signal (except subcarriers) are positive with respect to blanking, while the synchronizing pulses are negative with respect to blanking. In North American NTSC signals, the darkest portions of the image (black level) are offset positively with respect to blanking level. This offset is called either pedestal or setup, depending on how it is generated. In almost all other television signals, including component RGB, there is no setup, so black level is the same voltage as blanking level. Synonym pedestal.
