Tea spread to Japan
The Tang Dynasty was golden age of tea when the beverage spread wide. Relations with Japan in the subsequent Song Dynasty took tea to Japan. Chinese researchers say Japanese tea ceremony was originally practiced in Jinshan Temple, northeast of Hangzhou, before being taken into this country by a monk in 1291. While this simple tea custom died out in China, it was spread in Japan by Buddhist and Daoist monks, eventually developing into an elaborate ritual truly Japanese.
