Independent agency in the federal executive branch. Established in 1970, it works to protect and enhance the environment for present and future generations. The EPA's mission is to control and reduce various forms of pollution, including air, water, solid waste, pesticides, radiation and toxic substances. It works with state and local governments to develop and implement policies to attack environmental pollution.
