The length of one minute of arc along any great circle on the earth's surface. Since this actual distance varies slightly with latitude, a nautical mile by international agreement is defined as 1852 meters (6076. 103 feet or 1. 1508 statute miles). Compare mile.
Industry:Weather
The process or condition in which radiation travels between source and receiver via more than one propagation path. Because there can be only one “direct” path, some process of reflection, refraction, or scattering must account for multipath propagation.
Industry:Weather
A system for expressing distance, speed, and acceleration in which 1) the distance of one minute of arc along a meridian or great circle is one nautical mile; 2) a nautical mile per hour is a knot; 3) a nautical mile per hour per hour is the acceleration in knots per hour. Although the nautical system originated with marine operations, it has been adopted to report winds and aircraft speeds.

The twilight stage during which the sun's unrefracted center is at elevation angles −6° > ''h''0 > −12°. During a clear evening's nautical twilight, horizontal illuminance decreases from ∼3. 5–2 lux to ∼0. 008 lux. At nautical twilight's bright upper limit, the brightest stars are visible and the (ocean) horizon is distinct. At its dark lower limit, the horizon is generally invisible.

A type of photoelectric photometer used in a method of determining high-altitude winds on the assumption that stellar scintillation is caused by atmospheric inhomogeneities (schlieren) being carried along by the wind near tropopause level. In one design a star is observed with a single telescope that looks through a four-inch long rotatable slit. Two scintillation frequencies are monitored, one high and one low. The slit is rotated until the ratio of high-frequency to low-frequency scintillation is a minimum. At this point, the slit is oriented parallel to the wind. The magnitude of the frequency ratio is a function of the wind speed. In another design, two telescopes mounted four inches apart are focused on a star. Only one frequency need be monitored. By direct observation of phase relationships as the telescopes are rotated about a mutual axis, both direction and speed can be determined with less ambiguity and uncertainty than with the single telescope type.
