Measurements of various atmospheric parameters (such as temperature or water vapor) at various heights or pressure levels, as derived from satellite-based sensors.
Industry:Weather
Meteorological observation made, in addition to those fixed for a scheduled time, to meet special requirements, such as tropical cyclone forecasting.
Industry:Weather
Method of measuring fluxes of trace gases; similar to eddy accumulation except that the volume rate at which the sample is collected is constant. The flux is estimated as the product of the standard deviation of the vertical velocity, the difference in the concentration in each reservoir, and a scaling parameter. The technique has been applied to the measurement of the fluxes of heat, water vapor and some chemical species.
Industry:Weather
Measurement of the ability of soil water to conduct electricity, usually expressed in units of siemens per meter or millimhos per centimeter. Specific conductance is related to the concentration of ions in the water and is used to estimate the concentration of dissolved solids in the water.
Industry:Weather
Measured water loss from free water surface of class-A evaporation pan.
Industry:Weather
May be applied to any property of a physical system that can take on only two values, usually opposite in some sense (e.g., sign or direction). Thus, the electron and positron are said to have opposite polarity because their charges are equal in magnitude but opposite in sign. Similarly, anodes and cathodes are electrodes of opposite polarity.
Industry:Weather
Mathematical function describing the response of a system to a given input, for example, the streamflow response to a given input of rainfall; usually applied to linear systems.
Industry:Weather
Material used for cloud seeding.
Industry:Weather
Mass of thin and brittle plates of freshwater ice formed by breaking up of thin, skin ice into small pieces lumped together.
Industry:Weather
Maps, plots, or graphical presentations of weather radar observations designed to facilitate interpretation of the observations. Some displays are maps of such basic quantities as reflectivity factor or mean Doppler velocity on polar or other coordinate systems (See PPI and RHI). Others are maps of derived quantities, such as rainfall rate or vertically integrated liquid water; or of quantities or phenomena based on computer algorithms, such as vortex signatures, downbursts, fronts, or regions where hail is likely. Another class of radar display is employed for special analyses, for example, the VAD used for kinematic analysis of the wind field.
