The study of the interaction between matter and radiation. Since the energy levels in all atoms and molecules are discrete (quantized), the absorption or emission of radiation occurs at distinct energies (frequencies) characteristic of a given chemical. The energy levels probed may be rotational (microwave region), vibrational (infrared region), or electronic (visible or ultraviolet). In mass spectroscopy, molecules are ionized and the different masses selected by use of an electric or magnetic field. Many spectroscopic techniques have been used to identify molecules or atoms in the atmosphere.

One of the branches of physical meteorology, it shares much in common with cloud physics and, more generally, atmospheric remote sensing. The common approach is to determine distinct categories of synoptic weather patterns and then to assess statistically the weather conditions associated with these patterns. The term, which refers to synchronous weather systems such as cyclones and anticyclones, originated during the 1940s when military services became concerned with the climatology of weather types and its implications for transportation. While dynamic climatology is often global in scope, synoptic climatology generally deals with hemispheric or local climates.
