Full resolution digital AVHRR data (all channels) transmitted at S-band by POES satellites. The HRPT data stream is equivalent to local area coverage data, but is transmitted as a continuous broadcast by the satellite as it orbits the earth.
Industry:Weather
A collection of partially fluorinated hydrocarbons in use or under development as replacement compounds for the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The lack of chlorine in these compounds eliminates their potential to destroy stratospheric ozone. Also, the presence of H atoms makes them susceptible to removal from the atmosphere via reaction with hydroxyl radicals, reducing their effectiveness as greenhouse warming gases. The most widely used of this class of compounds is HFC-134a (CF3CFH2), which is currently being used in automobile air conditioners and domestic refrigeration applications.
Industry:Weather
Chromatographic technique similar to gas chromatography, except that various individual solvents, combinations of solvents, and changing concentrations of solvent are used in combination with stationary column phases to separate components of a liquid matrix. Various detectors are used in HPLC, including UV (fixed and variable wavelength), refractive index, and conductivity detectors.

One of three sounders that comprise the TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder package on NOAA polar orbiter satellites. HIRS-2, derived from the experimental HIRS-1, which flew on Nimbus 6 launched in June 1975, measures incident radiation in 1 visible and 19 infrared spectral regions, with a nadir resolution of 17 km.

HES is a new hyperspectral sounder was being designed for the GOES-R series of satellites that will provide improved spatial coverage, faster scanning speeds, and a smaller sensing footprint. HES was to resolve over 3000 spectral channels of information in the infrared, providing soundings with increased accuracy and higher vertical resolution. The HES sounder has been delayed (and will probably be renamed) for future GOES series.

An experimental NASA satellite (launched April 1978 as an Applications Explorer Mission) that carried a two-channel imaging radiometer that measured reflected solar radiation and thermal radiation emitted by the earth's surface.
Industry:Weather
A collection of partially chlorinated and fluorinated hydrocarbons (mostly methanes and ethanes), used as refrigerants, foam-blowing agents, and solvents. These species have been developed as replacements for the now-banned chlorofluorocarbons. Examples include HCFC-141b (CH3CFCl2) and HCFC-142b (CH3CF2Cl). These compounds are less harmful to the ozone layer than the chlorofluorocarbons, due to their shorter atmospheric lifetimes. However, because their ozone depletion potentials are nonzero, these compounds will only be in use temporarily and will ultimately be phased out of production.
