The electric field produced by an electric current in a conductor in a magnetic field. The electric field, which is perpendicular to both the current and the magnetic field, is the reaction field (in a bounded conductor) that balances the magnetic force on moving charges. It is named after Edwin H. Hall, who in 1879 first discovered this effect in laboratory investigations of gold. The Hall effect is a determinant in the behavior of the electrical currents generated by winds in the lower ionosphere, since these winds advect the ionized layers across the earth's magnetic field and produce a complex electrical current system in the ionosphere. The current system in turn produces small changes in the earth's magnetic field as measured at the surface. See also magnetic induction.
Industry:Weather
The direction toward which an aircraft or ocean vessel is oriented. A heading may be with reference to true north or magnetic north. The heading and course may be different, especially in air navigation, because of drift.
Industry:Weather
The difference between the input quantity applied to a measuring instrument and the output quantity indicated by that instrument. The inaccuracy of an instrument is equal to the sum of its instrument error and its uncertainty.
Industry:Weather
The correction applied to a mercury barometer to compensate for temperature and gravity.
Industry:Weather
The descriptive study of the motion of water substance in the atmosphere. Vapor motion and cloud imagery from satellite observations are displayed on television weathercasts.
Industry:Weather
The conceptual hydrological cycle for a specified continental surface that comprises water evaporating from the surface, condensing in the overlying atmosphere, and falling back to the surface. In reality, some of the evaporated water leaves the region in the wind and is replaced with water vapor brought into the region by wind.
Industry:Weather
The concentration of a chemical species in a liquid solution is proportional to its gas- phase partial pressure. The constant of proportionality is called the Henry's law constant and provides a measure of the solubility of a particular compound. For molecules that form ions in solution, Henry's law is modified to take account of the increased solubility as a function of pH.
Industry:Weather
The color exhibited by iridescent clouds and at times along the borders of lenticular clouds.
