An internationally agreed-upon day designated for more detailed or intensive observations of the atmosphere over broad regions of the earth. See aerological days.
Industry:Weather
Time period between the beginning and end of a gust of wind, usually less than 20 s.
Industry:Weather
A temperature scale with the ice point at 32° and the boiling point of water at 212°. Conversion with the centigrade temperature scale (°C) is accomplished by the formula: °F = (9/5)°C + 32. Compare Celsius temperature scale.
Industry:Weather
A characteristic feature in electric field records directly beneath a thundercloud in which the electric field momentarily reverses polarity during a burst of intense precipitation. The timescale for these events is of the order of minutes. The physical origins of the FEAWP are still unresolved.
Industry:Weather
An algorithm to compute rapidly the digital form of the discrete Fourier transform. The procedure requires that the length of the data series undergoing transformation be an integral power of two, which is often achieved by truncating the series or extending it with zeros. More flexible mixed-radix algorithms have been developed that allow data series of any length. They gain efficiency as the prime factors of the length become small, and they are equivalent to the FFT when the data series length is a power of two.
Industry:Weather
A heat index that relates the development of plants, insects, and disease organisms to environmental air temperature. GDD is calculated by subtracting a base temperature from the daily mean temperature and GDD values less than zero are set to zero. The summation over time is related to development of plants, insects, and disease organisms. The reference temperature (base temperature) below which development either slows or stops is species dependent. For example, cool season plants (canning pea, spring wheat, etc. ): base temperature is 40°F (5°C); warm season plants (sweet corn, green bean, etc. ): base temperature is 50°F (10°C); and very warm season plants (cotton, okra, etc. ): base temperature is 60°F (15°C). See degree day, heat unit.
Industry:Weather
A time-dependent numerical model of the atmosphere. The governing equations are the conservation laws of physics expressed in finite-difference form, spectral form, or finite-element form. Evolution of the model circulation is computed by time integration of those equations starting from an initial condition. The GCM can be used for weather prediction or for climate studies. Compare atmospheric circulation model, hemispheric model.
Industry:Weather
The unit of acceleration in the centimeter–gram–second system of units, equal to 1 cm s−2; commonly used in gravimetry.
Industry:Weather
Based on an ancient climatic classification scheme using solar illumination geometry, the region poleward of the Arctic or Antarctic Circles (66°33′N and 66°33′S, respectively). Compare Temperate Zone, Torrid Zone.
Industry:Weather
A region of free electrons in the ionosphere occasionally observed above the F2-layer. The existence of this region has not been definitely established.
